Burrows Lea: The House

Burrows Lea Country House

Burrows Lea house was built between 1870 and 1895. The first owner was Sir Arthur Clay, and other owners have included Lieutenant General Sir Hubert de la Poer Gough, and Jeremiah Colman, of the Colman's mustard empire. In 1946, the house was purchased by the world-renowned spiritual healer, Harry Edwards, who established his healing Sanctuary in the former billiard room, adjacent to the main house. The Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary still continues to offer healing help to all who request it, and the Old Sanctuary itself, which is a registered chapel, is also available for weddings.

Burrows Lea is set within 30 acres of gardens and woodland, benefiting from beautiful views across the valley to the south. The house is built of local stone quarried from Pitch Hill, which is to the south of the estate and set in the hills across the valley.

During World War II, Burrows Lea was commandeered by the Canadian Army and formed part of an anti-aircraft battery which protected London from the German bombers. Searchlights were located in the valley below Cherry Tree Walk, and gun emplacements were situated in the woods.

The house has recently been completely refurbished and offers accommodation to the highest standard.
